Facilities for Walking and Biking Can Increase Safety, but Intersections Still Lag

Reports on a study investigating correlation between pedestrian crashes and sidewalk gaps within the Central Florida region. The study finds that drivers are around 1.7 times more likely to hit pedestrians on roads with no sidewalk and that pedestrian crashes per mile are three times more likely on roads with no sidewalk (Investigating the Correlation Between Sidewalks and Pedestrian Safety(Accident Analysis & Prevention)). Also notes that safety for cyclists and pedestrians in intersections as well as road segments is often not addressed and shares the NACTO toolkit for designing protected intersections and an inventory of protected intersections from People for Bikes.
